I have always believed in the power of having a good mentor in your life. Over the years, I've seen first-hand the difference it can make for children and young people- both personally and professionally. When I was young I had a youth worker called 'Beeco', he would meet with me once a week at school and help me to set and achieve personal targets. He created opportunities for me, I got to host a radio show aimed at young people and he even took a group of us to Smash Hits Awards Show (shows my age lol!). My attitude and behaviour significantly improved.
Sometimes mentoring is formal and structured. Sometimes it happens in small everyday moments. Sometimes its shirt-term, sometimes it lasts for years.
But in whatever form it takes, the impact can be huge.
Having someone who listens, guides, challenges and believes in you can help young people see possibilities they may not have seen for themselves.
To everyone out there mentoring children and young people- whether you realise it or not- thank you. Keep doing what you're doing.
The difference you make really does matter. Mentorship Matters.
